A house once had a hallway that measured longer inside than outside.
Someone filmed it. Someone wrote a book about the film.
Nobody finished it.

The book is yours now.

Choose how to leave each room

Measure the door on the old videotape: slow, and you can't move while the tape runs.
Read the citation above a bookcase: quick, unless the book is wrong.
Write your own way out in pencil: instant, but loud.

Whichever you trust, the other two turn on you for the rest of the night.
Tapes rewind. Figures from the film creep closer while you look away. Your handwriting starts writing on its own.

Gather the pages

Loose pages of the book lie in the rooms. Together they tell what happened in that house.
You only keep the ones you're carrying if you make it back to your desk.

Stay ahead of the Reader

It starts a few rooms behind you and closes in all night.
It knocks before it comes in. It holds doors shut. It stops to read anything written on the walls, aloud.
When the house goes quiet, it is close.
